Whiskey Tea from the Hobbit Gardener

Hullo Friends! I just dropped by with a wonderful, simple tea recipe that’ll knock the socks off your wee feet.

Sometimes, when you want to cap off a wonderful day with a roaring fire and a snack, sometimes regular, old-fashioned tea just won’t do. THIS hobbit likes to enjoy a strong whiskey tea.

1 cup boiling water

1 tea bag

1 (1.5 fluid ounce) jigger whiskey

1 tablespoon milk

1 teaspoon white sugar

You’ll thank me. Wonderful for evening parties or lounging in the garden alone or with friends.

Home-Made Cola? Heck YEAH!

It has been a long interest of mine to brew or mix my own colas. I am an avid Coke fan and, while I enjoy the drink, I know it is hideously bad for me. The high-fructose corn syrup and the acids are scary enough. Recent revelations about the soft drink companies also have turned me away. I recently tried some of the organic options at EatIt.ca here in Winnipeg. While they do not taste like Coke or Pepsi, they are not meant to. In fact I believe they are as close to the original taste of these beverages when they were first introduced. Since then we have become a sugar-hungry society and the cola conglomerates have obliged.

I have done some research online and found there are quite a few people out there experimenting and coming up with some pretty awesome brews and mixes. A few of them use only natural essential oils and very few ingredients. One of them is the group at OpenSoda.org. As the name suggests, these recipes are all open and free to distribute and alter. There are a series of youtube videos. The first of the series I really enjoyed can be seen HERE.

The process is well documented and well planned. These folks have done the footwork and the testing so you can enjoy wonderful and very tasty colas. I urge all my friends to have a look. I will be experimenting with various recipes on the site. Also I hope to work around the recipes to make as organic a cola I can. I encourage any one out there interested in experimenting with similar ideas to contact us to share your results and recipes!

Pets for Christmas?

Christmas is usually the time of year when we are all stuck for *the* perfect gift. But it happens at other times of the year as well. The children have been wanting a puppy, Mom would like a kitten, little Johnny is really into snakes. Are pets appropriate gifts during the holiday season? No, they are not, and for some very good reasons.

The holidays are full of excitement for everyone. The children are wound up with expectation, the parents are harried with shopping, company, and dealing with the children. Where does a live animal that needs care, fit into all this? Well, it doesn’t.
